Background on the Novel

One last chance…

for Max, Fang, and Dylan…

before it all ends.

Are you ready for the final chapter? Are you ready for the ultimate flight? Because THIS IS IT. One last incredible, explosive adventure with an astonishing ending that no one could have seen coming.

In Short

Nevermore is the final installment in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson.  This book follows Max as she attempts to fulfill her destiny and save the human race from extinction.

I am probably one of the biggest Maximum Ride fans in existence.  Through thick and thin I have always stuck with the series.  Although I didn’t particularly care for the 4th, 5th, or 6th Maximum Ride book, I thought Nevermore was a suitable ending to the series.  It tied up all the loose ends and left me wishing that James Patterson would write just one more book.

One of my problems with Nevermore, though, was the fact that it heavily revolved around the Max/Dylan/Fang love triangle.  Truly, I don’t see the point of Max having to choose between Dylan and Fang, and I would have enjoyed the book much more if she spent more time kicking her enemies’ butts and less time deciding which guy was right for her.  Max just didn’t seem like the same character that she was in last six books.  Instead of putting her feelings aside as she had done in previous novels, she allowed it to distract her.

I also wished that there had been more interaction between Max and other members of her Flock.  Throughout the book, Iggy, Total, and Gazzy only had about a total of fifteen lines.  I missed the character dynamics that were present in the former books.  James Patterson spent so much time on Max and Dylan’s relationship that the other characters were hardly present.

I’ve been reading the Maximum Ride series ever since I was in fifth grade.  Every year, I have had the comfort of knowing that I would be able to read about the newest adventure that the Flock would partake in.  The Maximum Ride series became something more than books I enjoyed to read; instead, it became a comfort, a reminder of how much the series had affected me as a child (you can read more about that here).  It’s been seven years and I can’t believe the last book has finally arrived and the series is over.

Happy reading,

Mingakatara
